Redmond, October 14 — Microsoft has announced significant updates to its Copilot Studio, a platform that enables users to build apps, workflows, and agents in a single environment, as detailed in the September 2026 updates ahead of Microsoft Ignite 2026. These updates are part of Microsoft’s ongoing effort to bridge the gap between idea and production-ready solution by unifying interface, workflow, and agentic capabilities within a governed, extensible platform.
The public preview of apps in Copilot Studio allows makers to describe business needs in natural language and generate a draft app that can be refined conversationally while retaining access to underlying code for deeper customization.
Streamlining Business Processes
Apps in Copilot Studio support business processes by offering structured interfaces, such as in onboarding solutions where apps provide interfaces for managers and employees, workflows handle repeatable steps, and agents answer questions and adapt to exceptions. This streamlined approach enables organizations to connect agents to enterprise knowledge through a reusable knowledge base, with each agent configurable for specific knowledge sources and retrieval scope, and responses grounded with citations.
The updates are supported by Microsoft Copilot Managed Runtime, which provides Microsoft-operated hosting, identity management, governed data access, lifecycle management, Git-backed versioning, and centralized visibility for apps created across Copilot Studio, Copilot Cowork, and Copilot Code, enabling secure and reliable enterprise-wide adoption without lowering operational standards.
Enhanced Agent Capabilities
For agents, Hooks are now in preview for those powered by the GitHub Copilot harness, allowing deterministic control at key points in an agent’s lifecycle, such as session start, tool calls, and errors, by loading context, inspecting or blocking tool calls, transforming results, or responding to failures, while preserving agentic reasoning and enabling consistent logging and telemetry. The Foundry IQ integration with Copilot Studio is now generally available, allowing organizations to connect agents to enterprise knowledge through a reusable knowledge base.
Evaluations in Copilot Studio have expanded beyond agent conversations to automation, enabling assessment of individual AI nodes and broader processes using Custom graders and General Quality metrics, including Task Completion, Tool Accuracy, Safety against configurable thresholds, and Latency checks, with a new Custom Graders Library allowing reusable, tenant-specific graders generated by Copilot Studio for specific agents and scenarios.
Looking Ahead
As Microsoft continues to innovate and enhance its Copilot Studio, it will be exciting to see how these updates impact the way organizations approach app development, workflow management, and agent deployment. With the Microsoft Ignite 2026 conference just around the corner, we can expect to learn more about the future of Copilot Studio and its potential to revolutionize the way businesses operate.
