BAHÍA DE LOBOS, August 2 — A magnitude 5.1 earthquake has jolted the Pacific coast of Mexico today, striking 60 kilometers west of Bahía de Lobos. The tremor, occurring at 13:10 UTC, was detected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) through its real-time global seismic monitoring network, bringing immediate attention to the region. The earthquake registered at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers.
This depth is particularly significant, as seismologists explain that shallow events, defined as those less than 70 kilometers deep, typically produce stronger shaking at the surface compared to deeper tremors of the same magnitude. The immediate impact on the ground, therefore, can be more pronounced.
A Shallow Event
No tsunami warning was issued following the seismic event. Earthquakes falling within the magnitude 5 range are generally considered moderate, carrying the potential to cause minor to moderate damage, particularly in areas close to the epicenter. The immediate scene remains under observation for any reported effects from this moderate shaking.
The area surrounding Bahía de Lobos is no stranger to seismic activity. Geologists confirm that this part of Mexico is seismically active, a fact underscored by historical data.
Within approximately 300 kilometers of today’s epicenter, at least 62 earthquakes of magnitude 5.0 or greater have been recorded over the past two decades. This pattern highlights a consistent tectonic dynamism in the region, with the strongest event in recent memory being a powerful magnitude 7 earthquake documented in 2012. Seismologists are quick to note that aftershocks are a common occurrence following an earthquake of this size.
These subsequent tremors may continue to be felt across the affected area for days or even weeks. Residents on the ground are generally advised to maintain preparedness for further shaking, a standard recommendation in seismically active zones.
As the day progresses towards nightfall, the focus remains on monitoring the situation. The USGS continues its global seismic monitoring, providing crucial real-time data for events like this one.
