ACCRA, June 24 — Civil Society Organisations have endorsed increased equity investment in Electrochem Ghana Limited, specifically by the Minerals Income Investment Fund, following a delegation’s tour of the Ada Songor Salt Project. The CSO leaders described the company’s operations as a strategic national asset capable of transforming Ghana into a major player in Africa’s salt industry. The endorsement came after the delegation visited the site, toured facilities, and engaged management, traditional authorities, and community stakeholders.

Their assessment: the project is emerging as a key driver of industrialisation, job creation, and local economic development. Kofi Owusu Hene, Chief Executive Officer of the Consumer Protection Agency and widely known as Kofi Kapito, praised the company’s commitment to unlocking the economic potential of the Songor Lagoon.

According to him, the level of investment already made has positioned Ada as a future salt production hub with continental significance. “Electrochem’s commitment to developing Ghana’s salt industry is evident, and the investments being made have the potential to generate substantial economic opportunities for both the local community and the country at large,” Kapito stated. His comments come as Electrochem pursues an ambitious expansion programme that has attracted growing attention from investors and policymakers alike.

The CSOs expressed satisfaction with the scale of investment undertaken over the past five years, noting that the project ranks among West Africa’s largest salt mining ventures. Kapito stressed the need for sustained community engagement.

He urged management to continue educating residents on the long-term benefits while addressing concerns through dialogue and consultation. The record shows the company’s operations at Ada have become a focal point in discussions about Ghana’s industrial future. Sources familiar with the visit indicated the CSO leaders see Electrochem as more than a mining operation.

They view it as a template for how resource extraction can anchor local economic transformation when paired with consistent investment and community outreach. The timeline of the CSO endorsement follows years of development at the Songor Lagoon site. The delegation’s on-site inspection appears to have solidified their view that the project merits continued public investment through MIIF.

What to watch next: whether the Minerals Income Investment Fund moves to increase its equity stake in Electrochem, and how the company’s management balances expansion with the community engagement Kapito and others have called for.
