Android Earthquake Alerts Expand to Over 200 Regions
Google has expanded its Android Earthquake Alerts System to more than 200 regions worldwide, up from 98 previously supported areas. The expansion includes Panama and Guatemala among many others, according to Google’s official blog post. The system now covers more than double its previous reach, providing early warnings to a broader global audience.
How the System Uses Phone Sensors
The Android Earthquake Alerts System works by using smartphone accelerometers as mini seismometers when devices are plugged in and stationary. When the phone detects ground vibrations consistent with an earthquake, it can send alerts to users before destructive shaking arrives. This approach allows the network to function as the world’s largest mobile-based earthquake detection system, as described by Google.
Three Alert Levels and Enhanced ‘Be Ready’ Warnings
Users receive one of three alert levels based on shaking intensity: Be Aware for light shaking, Be Ready for stronger shaking, and Take Action for moderate to heavy shaking. The Be Ready alert has been upgraded to include more information such as the earthquake’s epicenter location and estimated magnitude. In the coming months, Google will roll out further enhancements to the Be Ready alert, including a map showing the shaking radius, magnitude data, recommended safety actions, and a learn-more button.
Impact and Future Developments
Google has also published a Crisis Resilience white paper detailing community preparedness efforts related to natural disasters. The company says the system provides precious seconds of warning that can allow users to take protective measures. Future updates will continue to improve the speed and detail of alerts in supported regions.
How the Alert Network Detects Earthquakes
The Android Earthquake Alerts System relies on smartphone accelerometers to function as a distributed network of mini seismometers. When a device is plugged in and stationary, its sensors monitor for ground vibrations indicative of seismic activity. This approach enables the system to detect earthquakes using the collective data from millions of phones, forming the world’s largest mobile-based detection network.
By analyzing patterns in accelerometer readings across nearby devices, the system can distinguish between ordinary motion and genuine earthquake signals. Once confirmed, it calculates the likely epicenter and magnitude, then issues tiered alerts based on predicted shaking intensity at the user’s location. This method allows warnings to be issued seconds before destructive shaking arrives, providing critical time for protective actions.

How the Three Alert Levels Work
The Android Earthquake Alerts System delivers three distinct alert levels based on predicted shaking intensity at the user’s location. Be Aware is triggered for light shaking and serves as a simple notification that an earthquake has been detected nearby, allowing users to stay informed without disruption. Be Ready is issued for stronger shaking and provides enhanced details such as the earthquake’s estimated magnitude, epicenter location, and recommended safety actions like drop, cover, and hold. Take Action is reserved for moderate to heavy shaking and delivers a full-screen alert with immediate guidance on protective measures to help users respond quickly before destructive shaking arrives.
