Copper

LONDON, July 8 — Copper prices have reached $4.50 per pound as of March 2025, according to the London Metal Exchange, marking a significant increase from $3.80 per pound in January 2024. The price surge reflects global demand from two major sectors: renewable energy infrastructure and the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence data centers. The U.S. Geological Survey, in its 2024 Mineral Commodity Summaries, reported that the United States produced 1.2 million metric tons of copper in 2023.

According to the same USGS data, copper demand specifically for data centers is expected to grow at an annual rate of 15 percent through 2030.

The Theft Problem

The high scrap value of copper has created a parallel problem. Copper theft incidents nationwide increased by 25 percent in 2024, per the National Insurance Crime Bureau. The economic incentive is straightforward: thieves target construction sites where copper wiring and piping are readily accessible.

The National Association of Recycling Industries noted in a February 2025 report that unregulated recycling yards often pay cash for stolen copper, with no questions asked. This practice, according to the NARI report, provides a ready market for stolen materials.

The 25 percent rise in theft incidents documented by the NICB represents a nationwide trend, affecting both urban and rural sites.

Data Center Demand

A 2024 study by the Uptime Institute found that AI data centers use up to 50 percent more copper per square foot than traditional data centers. The reason, according to the study, lies in the high-power requirements for GPU clusters that drive artificial intelligence computing. The Uptime Institute research indicates that as AI computing expands, the copper intensity of new data center construction will continue to rise.

The convergence of renewable energy buildout and AI infrastructure expansion has created sustained pressure on copper supplies. The global copper market now reflects competing demands from industrial modernization, energy transition, and technology sector growth.

The LME price data shows copper trading at $4.50 per pound as of March 2025, a level that reflects these structural factors. The USGS data on U.S. production provides one benchmark, but global supply dynamics remain complex. The trajectory of copper theft incidents will depend partly on enforcement actions against unregulated recycling yards.

The NARI report highlighted the role of cash transactions in facilitating the stolen copper trade. On the demand side, the 15 percent annual growth projection for data center copper consumption through 2030 suggests that price pressures are unlikely to ease soon.

The Uptime Institute study’s findings on AI data center copper intensity underscore the material implications of the technology sector’s expansion. Copper prices, theft statistics, and infrastructure investment figures will all bear watching in the months ahead. The intersection of industrial demand, security concerns, and global supply chains makes copper a strategic commodity for multiple sectors simultaneously.
