CAPE CANAVERAL, July 14 — A federal court filing unsealed this week reveals that SpaceX has formally petitioned the Federal Aviation Administration for an expedited environmental review of its Starship launch complex at Cape Canaveral, citing national security timelines tied to a classified Department of Defense payload manifest. The petition, obtained by InfoPulse Today, argues that delays in the FAA’s Programmatic Environmental Assessment for orbital Starship flights from Florida could jeopardize a series of military launch commitments the company has accepted for fiscal years 2027 and 2028.
According to the filing, SpaceX has already allocated two Starship vehicles for dedicated national security missions that require the vehicle’s full lift capacity of 100 metric tons to orbit. SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk, who founded the company in 2002 with the explicit goal of reducing space transportation costs to enable Mars colonization, has not publicly commented on the filing.
The record shows Musk has a history of downplaying competitors in the heavy-lift sector, notably calling Blue Origin’s efforts “copycats” in a 2021 tweet. The filing lands as the commercial launch industry watches Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket, which has yet to conduct its debut flight. Musk’s silence on that vehicle’s progress or on any stock decline is consistent with his approach to rival programs.
SpaceX’s Starship, currently in development, is designed to be fully reusable. Musk has stated the vehicle will be capable of carrying 100 metric tons to Mars.
The company’s track record includes the first privately funded liquid-fueled rocket to reach orbit—the Falcon 1 in 2008—the first private spacecraft to dock with the International Space Station, the Dragon capsule in 2012, and the first successful landing of an orbital rocket booster with the Falcon 9 in 2015. Musk’s net worth, estimated at $210 billion as of October 2023 by Forbes, is heavily tied to SpaceX and Tesla stock. Tesla, Inc. was founded in 2003 and Musk has led the electric vehicle manufacturer for years.
He also founded Neuralink and The Boring Company, both in 2016. Earlier, he co-founded PayPal in 1999, which was sold to eBay in 2002 for $1.5 billion. Born June 28, 1971, in Pretoria, South Africa, Musk now oversees a portfolio of companies that collectively depend on federal regulatory decisions and government contracts.
The FAA’s response to the SpaceX petition, sources familiar with the process say, is expected within 90 days—a timeline that will determine whether the company can meet its classified launch deadlines.
