Mexico City, October 12 — The story begins with a college team on the brink of history. Maryville University’s League of Legends roster is set to face Disguised in the 2027 LCS Promotion Tournament Grand Final at Arena Esports Stadium, a best-of-five series that could make them the first collegiate program ever to earn a spot in North America’s top professional league.
At its heart, this match represents more than a single series — it is the culmination of years of investment in esports at Maryville, a private university founded in 1872 in St. Louis, Missouri. The team earned its place in the final as the second seed from the North American Challengers League, having not lost a single series throughout the Promotion Tournament.
Their path included a decisive 3-0 victory over Cupid Esports on October 8, reversing a prior sweep loss to the same team in the NACL Summer Playoffs final. What unfolded earlier this week already marked a turning point: on October 7, Maryville defeated Disguised 3-1, the first time a college team won an official series against an LCS organization, a result acknowledged by Riot Games and the tournament broadcast.
That victory set up this rematch, with Disguised — which competed in the LCS during the 2026 season — fighting back through the lower bracket to earn another chance. For those involved, the stakes are deeply personal.
Nine former Maryville players have already reached the LCS as individuals, including Cloud9 mid laner Eain ‘APA’ Stearns and Disguised AD carry Sajed ‘Sajed’ Ziade, who will now face his former teammates in the Grand Final. Maryville’s League of Legends program, founded in 2015 as one of six founding members of the National Association of Collegiate Esports, has built a legacy of excellence: a national title with a perfect record, the first American university collegiate championship in 2017, and back-to-back College League of Legends titles in 2025 and 2026.
In Summer 2024, they became the first collegiate team to win the NACL without losing a series. The winner of this best-of-five match will secure the 2027 LCS Guest Slot, the sole pathway for non-partner teams to compete in the franchised league, where permanent partners cannot be relegated. That slot grants the right to play the full 2027 season against established organizations like Cloud9, Team Liquid, and FlyQuest, and to qualify for major international events including First Stand, the Mid-Season Invitational, and the World Championship.
The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. CT on Monday, October 12, 2026, and will be streamed live on Twitch.tv/LCS and YouTube.com/@LCS. Maryville University will host a watch party at the Saints Gaming Lounge at the same time, offering pizza and giveaways to students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
As the team prepares to take the stage, the broader narrative is clear: this is not just about one game, but about whether the door to the highest level of competitive League of Legends can finally open for a college program. What comes next depends on what unfolds in the coming hours.
