SpaceX launches 3 visitors to the space station for $55M each

For three wealthy businessmen, their lives are about to change in a way that few people can imagine. Larry Connor, Mark Pathy, and Eytan Stibbe, are set to spend more than a week at the International Space Station, a journey that will cost each of them $55 million. The trio, who run investment, real estate, and other companies, will be accompanied by former NASA astronaut Michael Lopez-Alegria, who will act as their chaperone during their stay.

Their journey began on Friday, when SpaceX launched them into space from Cape Canaveral, Florida, marking the company’s first private charter flight to the orbiting lab. The visitors will have access to all but the Russian portion of the space station, but will need permission from the three cosmonauts on board to enter certain areas.

Lopez-Alegria plans to avoid discussing politics and the war in Ukraine during their stay, hoping that the “spirit of collaboration will shine through.”

The Visitors

Connor, Pathy, and Stibbe, are an interesting mix of individuals, each with their own unique story. Connor, an American from Dayton, Ohio, runs the Connor Group, while Pathy, a Canadian, is the founder and CEO of Montreal’s Mavrik Corp. Stibbe, an Israeli and former fighter pilot, is a founding partner of Vital Capital. Before the flight, their enthusiasm was palpable, with Stibbe even doing a little dance when he arrived at the launch pad at Kennedy Space Center.

Stibbe has a special connection to the space station, having been a member of the same fighter pilot squadron as Ilan Ramon, who died aboard shuttle Columbia in 2003. He is carrying copies of recovered pages of Ramon’s space diary, as well as a song composed by Ramon’s musician son and a painting of pages falling from the sky by his daughter.

For Stibbe, this journey is a dream come true, and he believes that it is “proof for me that there’s no dream beyond reach.”

The Journey

The private Axiom Space company arranged the visit with NASA, and SpaceX and NASA have been upfront with the visitors about the risks of spaceflight. Lopez-Alegria, who spent seven months at the space station 15 years ago, will be responsible for ensuring their safety during their stay. The visitors will have all meals included, and will be able to enjoy the unique experience of living in space for an extended period.

Russia has been hosting tourists at the space station and before that the Mir station for decades, with a Russian movie crew and a Japanese fashion tycoon and his assistant visiting last fall. The International Space Station is the world’s most expensive tourist destination, and this journey marks a new chapter in the history of space tourism.

Looking to the Future

As the three visitors begin their journey at the International Space Station, it will be interesting to see how they adapt to life in space. With their stay set to last for more than a week, they will have ample time to experience the unique wonders of space travel. As the space industry continues to evolve, it will be exciting to see how companies like SpaceX and Axiom Space push the boundaries of what is possible.

What’s next for space tourism, and how will it change the way we experience space? Only time will tell, but for now, the journey of Connor, Pathy, and Stibbe is one to watch.

As we look to the future of space travel, it’s clear that this journey is just the beginning. With private companies like SpaceX and Axiom Space leading the way, we can expect to see more exciting developments in the years to come. Whether it’s the possibility of lunar or Mars missions, or the expansion of space tourism, the future of space travel is looking brighter than ever.

What will be the next major milestone in the history of space exploration, and how will it impact our daily lives? These are questions that we will be watching closely, as the journey of Connor, Pathy, and Stibbe comes to an end and a new chapter in space travel begins.
