ANAHEIM, September 12 — The story begins in a hall full of people who have spent three decades killing demons. On Saturday, during the opening ceremony of BlizzCon 2026 at the Anaheim Convention Center, Blizzard president Johanna Faries told the crowd that an animated television series adaptation of the Diablo franchise is in development at Netflix. It is the first time the dark world of Sanctuary has been headed for television.
Blizzard and Netflix announced the project jointly, and the company’s official description places the series in that same setting, where humanity is caught in the eternal conflict between the High Heavens and the Burning Hells.
What Blizzard said
The announcement arrived with a statement from Blizzard that framed the series as part of a wider push beyond games. “After decades of bringing entire universes to life through our games, we’re partnering with some creative powerhouses to tell even more stories beyond gaming across new screens,” the company said. “A new animated series set in the world of ‘Diablo’ is in development with Netflix.
More details will be shared in the future, but this is only the beginning, with even more taking shape across our universes.” That is, for now, the whole of it. No release date.
No episode count. No cast, no showrunner. Netflix has not commented beyond the joint announcement, and Blizzard says further details are expected to be shared in the future.
The timing is not accidental. The first Diablo game launched in 1996, which makes 2026 the 30th anniversary of the action-RPG franchise, and the most recent installment, Diablo IV, arrived in 2023.
BlizzCon 2026, held Sept. 12-13, is the first BlizzCon since Microsoft closed its $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard in 2023. The two-day fan festival celebrates Blizzard properties including Diablo, World of Warcraft and Overwatch.
A moment Blizzard has thought about
Ahead of the event, Faries told Variety that the convention itself was the point. “BlizzCon in and of itself represents so much for all of us to be able to shine a light on all the great work going on at Blizzard,” she said. “We have put a lot of thought into this moment, and why now, and how do we continue to capture and build on the momentum we’re experiencing as an organization.” The Diablo announcement marks Blizzard’s latest move to extend its game franchises beyond gaming.
The franchise is a cornerstone of the action role-playing genre, and this project would be its first animated television adaptation. What to watch next is straightforward enough.
Blizzard has promised more details in the future, and it has promised more beyond Diablo. For a franchise that has spent 30 years asking players to descend into the dark, the next chapter will be watched from the sofa.
