SAN FRANCISCO, October 16 — Google’s Android Earthquake Alerts System has expanded its reach to over 200 regions worldwide, doubling its coverage since its launch in 2021. The system, which has already issued over one billion earthquake alerts, now includes new regions such as Panama and Guatemala, providing early warnings to a greater number of people than ever before. This expansion is part of Google’s continuing effort to enhance public safety by delivering timely and detailed information to Android users during seismic events.
The Android Earthquake Alerts System utilizes sensors in supported Android and Wear OS devices, including Samsung Galaxy Watches, to detect earthquakes and send early warnings. These alerts can provide users with a few seconds of advanced notice before shaking begins, allowing them to take cover and safeguard themselves and their loved ones.
The system represents the world’s largest mobile-based earthquake detection network, leveraging the power of billions of Android devices to detect seismic activity and deliver alerts in real time. In addition to expanding coverage, Google has also improved the ‘Be Ready’ alert to offer users more information during an earthquake. The updated alert includes a map displaying the location where shaking has been detected, the estimated earthquake magnitude, and safety advice.
Users will also see a button to learn more about the earthquake as additional information becomes available. The type of alert varies depending on the estimated shaking intensity, with three types of earthquake alerts available to users.
This expansion is expected to be fully available within the next week, with alerts starting to roll out to users in newly supported regions beginning today. Google remains committed to enhancing its physical safety products, emphasizing the importance of providing information to people when they need it most. The company has also published a Crisis Resilience white paper detailing its efforts to help communities around the world better prepare for earthquakes and other natural disasters.
As we move forward, it will be interesting to observe how this expanded system influences earthquake preparedness and response in the affected regions. The Android Earthquake Alerts System underscores Google’s commitment to harnessing technology for public safety and resilience.
