Late-night collision on Lake Michigan leaves one dead, 13 injured

A late-night collision on Lake Michigan near Monroe Harbor late last month left a 26-year-old woman dead and 13 others injured, according to attorneys representing survivors from the smaller vessel involved. The crash occurred June 25 around 11:45 p.m. as both boats were returning to the harbor.

A large cabin cruiser carrying nine passengers struck a smaller boat that held five people, including Johanna Gregory of West Loop, who died. The law firm Salvi, Schostok & Pritchard, which represents occupants of the smaller boat, announced the details in a statement Wednesday, saying it is “thoroughly investigating the crash to find out exactly what caused this tragic collision and who may be responsible.”

The Collision and Immediate Aftermath

According to the law firm, the cabin cruiser struck the smaller craft as both vessels navigated back to Monroe Harbor on a summer night. In addition to Gregory’s death, 13 other people suffered injuries in the incident.

The firm said it intends to pursue accountability on behalf of its client and any other victims who pursue legal action. “As our investigation progresses, we intend to pursue accountability on behalf of our client and any other victims who pursue legal action,” the statement read. Representatives from the larger boat could not be reached for comment.

Separately, the Grady family released a statement expressing grief over the tragedy. Jason Grady, 27, who was aboard the smaller boat, is beginning his recovery, according to the family.

Details of his injuries have not been made public. “We are grateful Jason is beginning his recovery, and we deeply appreciate the support, care, and prayers we have received,” the statement said. “We hope the investigation brings clarity and accountability for everyone affected.” The family described themselves as “heartbroken” and “devastated” by the event.

Services for Gregory will be held Friday in Rochester, New York, according to her obituary. The investigation into the crash remains active.

Brandon Damm of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the lead investigator, declined to comment via an emailed statement, saying only: “This is still an active investigation and we are unable to comment.” The U.S. Coast Guard and the Chicago Police Department, which are also investigating, did not return messages seeking comment.

Background: A Busy Urban Harbor

Monroe Harbor sits along Chicago’s Lake Michigan shoreline, just east of Grant Park and a short walk from the Museum Campus. It is a protected basin that serves as a gateway for recreational boaters and charter vessels accessing the lake.

The harbor is part of a chain of municipal harbors managed by the Chicago Park District, which oversees mooring and launch facilities for thousands of seasonal boaters each year. The area has long been a hub for pleasure cruising, fishing trips, and sailing. Boats of all sizes, from small runabouts to large cabin cruisers, share the narrow channels and crowded docks.

Nighttime returns to the harbor, especially on summer weekends, can create congestion as vessels maneuver into tight slips after dark. The U.S. Coast Guard and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources share jurisdiction over safety on Lake Michigan and its harbors, with local police also having authority near shore.

Fatal collisions on the Great Lakes are rare but not unheard of. Prior incidents have involved alcohol, operator inattention, or mechanical failure. In response to past accidents, state and federal agencies have stepped up patrols and boater education campaigns, though enforcement remains limited given the vast area of open water.

Monroe Harbor itself has been the scene of smaller mishaps, including groundings and minor collisions, that typically result in property damage rather than loss of life.

Investigation and Implications for Boating Safety

This crash highlights the risks that persist when leisure boating and urban harbor traffic intersect. For readers who use the lake for recreation, the accident is a reminder that even a routine late-night return can turn deadly.

The investigation will likely focus on factors such as speed, visibility, and whether the larger vessel’s operators were paying attention. The outcome could shape how boating safety is enforced in Chicago’s harbors for years to come. With multiple agencies probing the circumstances, the public awaits answers about what transformed a normal summer evening on the water into a fatal tragedy.
