LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A Louisville nonprofit is offering guidance for those in Kentucky looking to help after flash flooding devastated communities and infrastructure in Nepal. More than 350 people are confirmed dead, and more than 1,300 are missing, with those numbers expected to rise.
Denise Sears, president and CEO of SOS International in Louisville, said the organization is already in contact with an Australian group that helps collect and distribute products in that part of the world. “It’s devastating to see such a jewel of the world devastated by this disaster,” Sears told Spectrum News. SOS International provides unused medical equipment to people around the world. Sears said communities recovering from disasters often need a wide range of supplies as clinics and hospitals are rebuilt.
She said American organizations may step in to help when the area is somewhat stabilized after search and rescue is complete. “What we have found in rebuilding in other areas impacted by disasters, when you have to rebuild a clinic or a hospital it can be everything from hospital beds to band aids,” Sears said.
The organization has tens of thousands of individual items that could help in a disaster. But Sears said having supplies available is only part of the challenge. “Because of the terrain, it’s very, very hard to move supplies,” Sears said.
“We don’t want to move things somewhere and then they don’t have the capacity to deploy.” Sears said people looking to support relief work should choose organizations that have worked in the area before. “If an organization has never worked in that type environment, they’re not going to be as effective as those that have been, so it takes a little effort on our part,” Sears said.
Sears said Nepal’s Red Cross is a good place to start for people looking to support an organization on the ground. SOS International has distributed unused medical products in more than 100 countries and territories around the world.
